2. A method you actually enjoy. You don't have to use a pour-over to have a meaningful ritual. A well-made cup from a drip machine you've dialed in is every bit as intentional as a V60. What matters is that you've made a choice — that this isn't just default behavior but a small act of self-knowledge. If you love your $30 Mr. Coffee and it makes you a cup you look forward to, that's your ritual. Own it.

3. At least sixty seconds of actual presence. This is the part most people skip, and it's the part that makes coffee a ritual rather than just a habit. Before the phone, before the news, before the inbox — sixty seconds of just drinking your coffee and being in the moment. That's it. You're not meditating (unless you want to). You're just there, with your cup, before the day takes over.

The coffee ritual that serves you is the one that fits your actual life, reflects your actual preferences, and gives you at least one moment in the day that feels like it belongs entirely to you. That's the whole point. Not optimization. Not performance. Not proving to yourself or anyone else that you're the kind of person who has their life together.

Just a cup that you made, that you chose, that you're actually tasting.
